7 Ducks hatched!

·         Friday we had one duck starting to hatch.

·         The duck cracked all around the shell, but didn’t come out.

·         Peter’s Family did duck daycare and took the incubator home for the weekend.

·         One hatched Friday.

·         Four hatched Saturday.

·         Two hatched Sunday.

·         Today we took the ducks outside.

·         We got to hold them.

·         They look the same except for one all brown one.

·         They swam and ran around.

·         They splash and dive into the water.

·         They eat, drink, pee and poop a lot.

·         We made a circle and let them walk around in the classroom.

·         Peter’s family took videos of the action.

·         The ducks are really fuzzy.

Ducks!

2012-05-18_0002

Our ducks are early! At 1:30 today Madi noticed one of the eggs was cracked. Sure enough, one egg was cracked pretty well, and a second one had one little pushed out crack. We watched for the next 2 hours as the one duck crack all the way around the egg and started pushing out. We were not able to see the duck get out of the egg before it was time to leave.

Peter’s family was kind enough to duck daycare over the weekend. After each duck hatches in the incubator it will regain strength and dry off. Once it’s able to walk around it’s transferred to a duck home with a heat lamp and food and water. We started with 11 eggs and 2 are starting to hatch. I have no idea how many will hatch over the weekend, but they will be back in the classroom next week.

How exciting!

The picture is taken with a camera attached to my computer. We were watching the eggs hatch with this camera displayed on the Smart Board.

Mallard Eggs

Nature_walk_001

·         We got our mallard duck eggs on Tuesday.

·         They are in the incubator.

·         It needs to 99.5 degrees in the incubator.

·         They will be in the incubator for 28 days.

·         We only have 11 because some broke.

MindQuirks

We learned about Minnesota History with 4 stations.

Farming

·         That they had small wagons to travel in.

·         They used buffalo chips to build fires.

·         They used oxen to pull the plow.

·         They used a special corn planter.

Lumber Jack

·         They had 8 big work horses that pulled huge trees.

·         They branded their trees so they knew who they belonged to.

·         There were 2 huge fires that collided and destroyed towns.

·         They worked from sunup to sundown with one hour to eat.

Flour Mills

·         Flour mills had stones that ground up the wheat.

·         The flour powder was flammable.

·         When there were sparks the flour would explode.

·         There are four types of flour; corn, rye, wheat, white.

·         You can make baskets and toys out of straw.

Immigrants

·         They made their own sausage with pig intestines.

·         Most people had a chicken coop and a pig pen in their backyard.

·         They washed clothes by hand with a washboard.

I will post pictures once I figure out how to get them off the ipad.

iPad sharing!

Students have been writing and publishing their own stories using our favorite app, Scribble Press. I would like to invite parents to come in and check out our creativity and our new iPads. Please come in and eat lunch with your child any day in April. After lunch your child will share some of their favorite Scribble Press stories that they created and if there is time they can share some of their favorite apps.

Students come in from recess around 12:45 to eat lunch. No need to sign up, just sign in at the office and then meet your child in the cafeteria.
